Director, Joint Staff – Alabama National Guard

 

BG James E. Porter Jr. was assigned as Director of Joint Staff, Alabama National Guard on 01 April 2015. As Director of the Joint Staff he is responsible for managing joint programs and operations for the Alabama National Guard Joint Staff and oversees issues that impact 13,500 members of the Alabama National Guard for the Adjutant General. Joint programs include Civil Support Team, State Partnership Program, Counter Drug Task Force, Cyber Response, Theater Security Engagement, Joint Interagency and Multi-National Coordination as well as Military Support to Civil Authorities during domestic response and natural disaster operations. BG Porter earned his joint experience deployed to Iraq in 2005 as Commander, 200th Engineer Battalion and Explosives Hazard Coordination Cell, MNCI C7, a joint multinational element supporting Task Force Troy conducting Counter IED operations. BG Porter is an Army Acquisition Corps member and qualified Logistics Officer.

 

BG Porter enlisted as an Engineer soldier in 1980 and received his commission as an Engineer Officer in 1986 through Officer Candidate School. BG Porter served in various assignments as an Engineer Officer including Battalion Commander and transitioned to Logistics branch in 1990. Prior to assuming the position of Director of the Joint Staff, Colonel Porter served as the Chief of Staff, Alabama Army National Guard from 2009 - 2015 and as Chairman of the National Guard Bureau Chiefs of Staff Advisory Council from 2011 – 2015, Combined Maintenance Shop Superintendent, Maintenance Management Officer, Deputy Director of Logistics, G4, Director of Logistics, and G1, Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel. BG Porter is a qualified Logistics Officer and Army Acquisition Corps Member with certifications in Life Cycle Logistics Level III, Program Management Level II, and Facilities Engineering Level I.
