Alabama National Guard > Resources > Soldier and Family Support Network > Military Funeral Honors

Our mission is to render professional military funeral honors, in accordance with service tradition, to all eligible veterans when requested by an authorized family member.

We provide all honors authorized by the Department of Defense (DoD) for military veterans and retirees. A veteran is anyone who was honorably discharged and can be verified by a DD Form 214. A retiree's status must be verified with a DD Form 214 or Retirement Certificate.

A veteran's service consists of a flag fold and presentation along with the playing of TAPS. DoD does not authorize pallbearers or a firing detail for this type of service.

A retiree's service consists of pall bearers, firing detail, flag fold, flag presentation and the playing of TAPS. This service is conducted with a maximum of nine soldiers. General Officers and E-9's are authorized 23 soldiers to perform their service.

All funeral honors are provided at no cost to anyone. We are also authorized to perform services for any branch, but only after the service branch of the deceased has been contacted and is unavailable to provide services.

To request Military Funeral Honors, the next-of-kin (NOK) or funeral director must fax the Funeral Request Form (available below) to the Military Funeral Honors Office in Montgomery at (334) 274-6324.
